Countdown to darkness

Three months from now, the moon’s shadow will descend a narrow path across the United States towards the southeastern part of the country, creating a total solar eclipse. Because Clay County lies directly in the path of totality for the Aug. 21 eclipse, residents and visitors alike may experience the rare celestial event right at home.
There has not been a total solar eclipse in the continental United States since 1979 and North Carolina will not experience another total solar eclipse until 2078.
