
“We knew early on that programs don’t change lives, relationships do,” Theresa Waldroup says while explaining what Clay County Community for Students does. Twenty years ago with a small grant and funds from local churches and businesses, CCCS went about establishing those relationships within all three schools in the Clay County school system by starting their Great Leaps Math and Great Leaps Reading programs.
Great Leaps are programs that help children, who are mostly referred through the schools, catch up with their peers in math and reading. “Data shows that if you can get them before the third grade it increases your chances two-fold to keep them in school,” Waldroup explains, and keeping them in school is the ultimate goal.
