Penland told he cannot run for commission seat

Republican county commission candidate Dwight Penland was disqualified Tuesday from running in this year’s election. Two Board of Elections members agreed with a challenge submitted by the county Republican Party chairman that Penland does not meet residency requirements.
After about three hours of deliberation during a hearing before the Board of Elections and packed crowd of observers, BOE members Patty Swanson and Pat Margo, both Republicans, voted to uphold the residency challenge. The third member and chairman Jerry Anderson, a Democrat, abstained from voting.
