
For several months, news media has warned of the impending eclipse. Some predictions almost make the looming celestial event seem like a sort of “apoceclipse,” something to be dreaded and not enjoyed.
So how did ancient peoples deal with sudden darkness which they probably did not understand? While the superstitions of some cultures exhibited fear of eclipses, others explained eclipses as something eating the sun. Of course, that would also be something to be feared. Some others saw an eclipse as a sign of angry gods.
