“We’ve made a lot of progress from this time last year,” said Sandy Zimmerman, chairing the first board meeting of the new year for the Small Town Main Street group which met at the Clay County Courthouse Tuesday evening.
The group discussed:
• Ongoing work on the historic courthouse building on Hayesville Square.• Progress on new awnings on storefronts around the square.
• Final legal moves to transfer ownership of the historic courthouse to the town of Hayesville and he Clay County Communities Revitalization Association, a process that could be completed by the end of this week.
“Everything’s falling into place,” Mayor Harry Baughn told the group in his report which included progress on a grant toward rehabilitation of two downtown buildings and installation of new awnings on Sanderson Street and underway on Church Street.
Plans to begin work on the historic courthouse roof have been temporarily delayed until March because an expensive piece of equipment will be needed for painting. Combining the roofing and painting projects and renting the equipment only once will result in a savings of about $3,000, board member Deborah Nichols told the group.
The target for completing both jobs is mid-April, before the spring and summer activities begin around the square.
