May 7, 2018 -The US Forest Service has reopened the Appalachian Trail from Garenflo Gap to Hot Springs. The 50 acre Deer Park Fire is now 100% contained. The closure order for the vicinity of the fire, including the Van Cliff Loop Trail (TR #313), has been lifted.
Firefighters were pulled from the fire lines Saturday in response to thunder and anticipated thunderstorms in the area. About half an inch of rain fell across the fire area between Saturday night and Sunday. A small group of firefighters, including local district personnel, returned to rehabilitate fire lines.
"Local, state, and federal agencies worked together to make quick and efficient progress," remarked District Ranger Richard Thornburgh. "The large number of firefighters and equipment allowed us to make a direct attack and keep the fire small, despite the terrain."
Even with forecasted precipitation please remember to continue to practice fire safety as dry conditions may return quickly. Never leave a campfire unattended. If it is too hot to touch, it is too hot to leave.
