The closure of the Westgate Plaza Kmart this spring, announced by Sears Holdings on Jan. 4, could add another bare storefront to the growing number of partially vacant shopping centers in Franklin.
The store is one of more than 100 Kmart and Sears retail closures announced on Jan. 4.
Eligible workers will get severance and will have the chance to apply for open positions at nearby stores, according to a statement from Sears Holdings.
Westgate Plaza lost its other anchor tenant on Oct. 24 when the Ingles store there shut down before the new Ingles opened on Georgia Road on Oct. 24.
“While the Franklin location has survived previous Kmart closing announcements, Sears Holdings has determined the Franklin store did not fit into its latest transformation plans,” said Economic Development Commission Director Tommy Jenkins.
