Color, style and costs were the main considerations when business owners and tenants met for the second time to discuss what to do about aging awnings on buildings around the Hayesville Town Square.
About a dozen interested parties gathered April 21 at town hall. Although they took no official action as a group, they generally agreed to the following:
• Muted awnings are preferable to awnings in bright colors;
• There should be some uniformity with roofing on the historic Clay County Courthouse now undergoing renovation; and
• Metal roofing with scalloped edging that gives the appearance of shake shingles appealed to most of the group.
Mayor Harry Baughn said what is needed now are renderings in the wood shake-looking metal shingles in various colors. He agreed to contact contractor Tighe White for some samples and also to converse with Mike Finnegan, store manager at Lowe’s Home Improvement in Murphy, for information on that company’s products and prices.
“Then let’s get together again and maybe we can put this all together and say are we going to do it [upgrade or replace the current awnings] and if so, when,” Baughn said.
