“People who bought in town didn’t buy into all the restrictions,” - Jeanne Tiger

The Hayesville Planning and Zoning Board, after lengthy discussion, decided to make no recommendation on the size of accessory buildings or garage apartments on residential property.
“As a governmental body, imposing restrictions on private property—if we’re doing it for aesthetic issues, that presents a whole can of worms we don’t need to get into,” board member Jeanne Tiger pointed out at Tuesday evening’s board meeting.
Board member Bess Moffat agreed with her. “I don’t think we should say what people can do with their property unless it presents a health and safety hazard,” she said. “We don’t dictate our neighbor’s taste.”
“People who bought in town didn’t buy into all the restrictions,” Tiger noted. “A home is a man’s castle. That principle is what has driven a lot of America. I hold fast to that.”
