HONOR FLIGHT

Besides Memorial Day being celebrated in May, it is also Military Appreciation Month. For U.S. military men and women, those serving as well as retired veterans, it is a special time to be honored.

On May 13, six local veterans experienced a special honor and the ride of a lifetime when they were flown to Washington D.C. by Blue Ridge Honor Flight. Two women and four men, were gifted the flight, two nights at the Asheville Hilton and meals, to show appreciation for their wartime efforts. Clay County resident William “Bill” Dailey; Hiawassee residents Martha Neal Warth, Todd Kimsey and Shirley Sonnenfield; and Richard Parker and Austin Derreberry, of Andrews,  left early in the morning with dozens of other veterans and spent the entire day seeing the monuments and war memorials before flying back to Asheville.
