Last year was productive for Hayesville’s Small Town program with the formation of Historic Hayesville, Inc. as the nonprofit administrator and managed by community volunteers on the HHI Board and committees meeting on a monthly schedule. In addition to being a North Carolina Department of Commerce Small Town Main Street designee, Hayesville is also an affiliate member of Main Street America at the nation level. The next general meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17 in multi-purpose room on second floor of the courthouse. It’s open to all who would like to be involved with use of the downtown area.
Support increased last year for the revitalization of our downtown commercial district with the new HHI organization comprised of partnerships with at least eight nonprofits with common goals for our community.
Small Town/HHI is dependent on groups and individuals getting involved for success and implementation of new projects. Volunteers are needed for the Small Town Main Street Four Point Approach plan under each HHI committee of design, economic, promotions and Friends of Historic Hayesville as the support group for their activities and projects. Next week’s meeting will provide opportunity to hear updates and participate in work sessions to make 2017 another successful year.
Combined efforts in 2016 resulted in new businesses locating down town producing more jobs and filling vacant spaces. Plans are in the works for more with the building rehab project application originating with Hayesville’s eligibility through the Small Town Solutions Fund. Mayor Harry Baughn has Tri-County Community College assisting with the rehab grant process which should be completed soon. Baughn has also formed partnerships with business owners for new awnings and other organizations for visible improvements around the square.
