The Hayesville Town Council voted Monday evening to complete the town’s awnings project and also discussed the annexation of some contiguous county property.
Council members agreed to support a letter of commitment extending the lease on the historic courthouse property, recently leased from the county for 20 years, adding an extension of 10 more years.
They approved the appointment of Hayesville High School science teacher Austin Hedden to the Clay County Board of Adjustment. Hedden was sworn in at the meeting by Hayesville Town Clerk Susan Morgan.
Up with the awnings
Progress on the much discussed downtown replacement of Hayesville’s aging awnings is visible and in various stages of completion, Mayor Harry Baughn told the council.
“I’m excited that it’s finally under way and we’re waiting now for metal to come from the metal roofing company,” the mayor said. Most downtown business owners have signed on and agreed to replace their awnings.
What to do about people who opted out, especially if their awnings are in a central location with new awnings going up on either side, was a question raised by Councilwoman Sarah Buckley.
