Board votes to look into renovating Community Service Building

The Clay County Commissioners Thursday broached the prospect of moving some county offices from the Hayesville square to the old Department of Social Services building, now the Community Services Building on Riverside Circle but voted to take no action until the board studies the matter further. Despite a parade of requests to allow the Clay County Chamber of Commerce to offer a bid for the site of present county offices, should they become vacant, the commissioners moved to take other steps before contemplating such a move. They voted to:
• Put together a plan to study the financial ramifications;
• Establish a time frame;
• Asked Commission Vice Chairman Robert Penland to study the cost of remodeling offices in the Community Services Building; and
• Determine how the county would pay for such a move.
Commission Chairman Clay Logan, leading his first official meeting after assuming the board chairmanship, asked for the board’s comments on relocating the county finance office and board of elections.
Commissioner Robert Peck, noting that “there’s no real plan we’ve seen regarding what the cost is going to be,” immediately raised some objections.
