A local man is being held in the Clay County jail on multiple charges, including possession of drugs and a weapon, after deputies arrested him at Hayesville Elementary School last week.
Richard Glenn Scroggs, 32, of Hayesville, was arrested on Thursday morning, Oct. 6 and charged with failure to appear on a felony, felony gun on educational property, resisting a public officer, possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The incident began when School Resource Officers Donovan Byers and Melissa Marianno were notified that a parent was on campus without checking in at the school office, according to a press release from Clay County Sheriff Vic Davis. The officers found Scroggs talking to his son on the school playground and questioned him about why he was on campus. As the officers informed Scroggs that he should have checked in at the school office, a warrant check was conducted and a loaded firearm, was found in Scrogg’s vehicle which was parked on campus. When officers learned Cherokee County had a $40,000 outstanding warrant against Scroggs, they attempted to place him under arrest. Scroggs began running across campus and was apprehended by the officers.
